Compact Grinder Works Great!

I purchased one of these grinders 7 or 8 years ago to replace my previous grinder. I did not give that purchase much thought - I just needed a grinder. When I used the grinder for the first time I was very pleasantly surprised at how much better this grinder performed than its predecessor.

The best aspect of this grinder is that the blades rotate relatively slowly so the grinding takes place slowly and evenly. I can grind coarse or very fine (not perfect, but good enough for turkish "powder"). I find tilting the grinder back and forth provides very even grinding. I keep mine in a cupboard and the retracting cord stays out of the way when it is stored or taken out to be used. Cleaning is very easy due to the dome-shaped clear plastic top. It is also very compact so I can tuck it into a corner in the cupboard.

I also own an expensive counter-top grinder which allows very precise grinding but honestly, it's overkill most of the time - and it's always in the way. The Proctor-Silex 160B comes out every morning, I dutifully fill it with beans, flip it over while grinding for about 6 seconds, dump the contents into my french press, unplug it, sweep out the excess with a finger and return it to the cupboard - total time invested is less than 30 seconds!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed the plastic blade retainer had cracked (after more than 2,500 uses!). I started casually looking for a replacement and found big, expensive grinders that rotated way too fast. Finally a web search turned up an exact replacement. I bought two for less than $8 each. I expect these may outlast me!
Great product!!

Bought this item just for coffee beans, but have since used it for spices. Love it! The cord winds up inside which makes great for putting it away.
I love this bean grinder!

Reviewer: E. Robinson,
I love this bean grinder. I have had it for about 13 years, and it is still going strong. I am buying another one as a back up just incase it quits on me; I dont ever want to be in a position where i cant grind my beans ;) Anyway, i like it because it is a smaller size, its easy to handle and it does a great job grinding beans. I sometimes use it to grind sugar to a powder form, if i'm out of powdered sugar too.
Easy to store and easy to use

Picked this product up for a Christmas gift and my mother loved it. Was able to use it within 15 minutes after unwrapping it. The blades are easy to clean and, although it's size isn't very big, it can handle a lot of beans. Grinds very well and haven't had any issues with it so far (about 1 month in). The wind-up cord is a very nice feature and with, a one push button, it's process is simple. Perfect for those mornings and days when you want a stronger coffee or the smooth taste of freshly ground coffee. Would buy again for any other family members or friends interested in grinders.
Non-stick bowl

My Proctor Silex grinder still works fine after 6 years but part of the plastic ring around the blades broke off so it may die soon. I'm looking for a replacement and may purchase another brand if I can find one with reviews that meet my needs.
Pros:
-- ALL the ground beans dump easily after grinding...no digging out of ground beans at the bottom of the bowl as is characteristic of the Braun and others based on reviews.
-- The beans grind quickly and evenly
-- The cord is housed in the unit for a neat counter
Cons:
-- The bowl is too small to easily hold enough beans for 12 cups. It has to be carefully piled over the bowl and the top put on carefully. There are usually beans on the counter and floor after filling.
-- After grinding there is always some spillage of coffee grounds on the counter
-- The top only fits one way causing more mess when trying to get it on over the mound of beans.
