| One other reviewer stated that this grinder is ungodly big - soooo not true. At a little under 10 inches tall, 5 inches deep, and 4 and 1/2 inches wide, this grinder is WAY smaller than my previous Cuisinart Burr Grinder which just recently broke. And the noise! DECIBLES quieter than my Cuisinart!!! It is such a low sound for a grinder. Mainly sounds a little louder than a murmur....First time I grinded coffee, I nearly jumped for joy that the volume was loads lower than my other one! Grinds were also very even. I grind in between medium and fine, and I did not see extremely powerdy grinds or even course grinds. Everything was very even in it's texture! Great grinder. I love it already!!! |

I bought the Krups GVX2-14 to replace a Braun burr grinder that I have had for about 8 years. The Braun was still working, but it was getting slow and noisy.
The Krups is a well-engineered, solidly-built unit. It has a range of settings for producing grinds of different fineness consistently from batch to batch. A little experimentation will give you the results you want, and the instruction booklet gives some helpful hints. There is also a setting that controls the length of time the grinder operates before automatically shutting off. This is given in "cups" of beans being ground, and may or may not correspond to your own definition of "cup" with the measure that you use. A little experimentation, though, will allow you to pick a setting that grinds all the beans but doesn't run long afterward. There is also a separate on/off switch. The unit is pleasantly quiet.
Removing coffee is easy and the grinder comes with a small brush for cleaning out coffee that collects around the opening from the grinding chamber. Cleaning the removable plastic hopper that holds the grounds is likewise easy. I haven't yet tried cleaning the hopper that holds the whole beans.
My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that a safety interlock prevents the motor from operating unless the cover for the bean hopper is on securely. This seems like overkill to me, since getting your finger into the grinding chamber would be nearly impossible.
All in all I am very pleased with the Krups, and hope it will last as well as my old Braun, which I've decided to keep as a back-up. |

When I read in these reviews that this grinder was fairly large, I hesitated, but went ahead and ordered anyway. Well, the package arrived today 11-01, (ordered on 10-26) and the grinder is fantastic. It is actually a bit shorter than my old Braun KMM30, but a bit wider. The design is clean and uncluttered. The Braun has a mechanical timer that needs to be reset each time it is used. The Krups has selectors for quality of grind (very wide range from fine to very course) and quantity of grind. Then there is a backlit power stop/start switch. Cobalt blue. So once you get the quality/quantity down for your taste, you leave it and just hit the power button.
Grind seems to be uniform, better than the Braun. Much better.
Quieter and faster than the Braun, too.

I've definitely become a coffee snob over the years. The only beans I buy are from Trader Joes, the House Blend is still the best coffee I have ever had. The coffee is more expensive, but given that I have nearly stopped buying coffee at the shops I have found I am saving a TON of money. Hence I could justify buying this Burr Grinder.
What some people see as weaknesses, I see as strengths. I did not want a large capacity hopper. Its too big and an airtight container keeps the beans fresher. I only have the one coffee pot, so why would I want to make more than one pot at a time? I have to add water and change filters, why should refilling the hopper be a problem? Plus the smaller the hopper, the smaller the unit overall and its a great size for me.
The mill isn't very loud, less noisy than a blender and I don't wake anyone when I get up to make coffee. It sometimes gets a high pitched whine as it gets up to speed and no beens have fallen into the burrs. It doesn't seem to be a problem at all and the beans do fall into place without needing to tap it or anything. The longest this took was maybe 4 seconds, but it doesn't seem to do any harm, just scary the first time it happens!
I have noticed that if you use the grinder too many times in succession it overheats and shuts off. Wait 5 minutes and it will work just fine. The ONLY reason I found this out was because I had it on the wrong setting and then immediately ground more at the right setting. Again, you only have one coffee pot, so you only need to grind once per pot and the unit has plenty of time to cool down in between.
For me I found the settings for the amount of coffee to be rather high. If you set it to grind a full pot (12) and put in a full pot of water in your coffee maker (12) you will need to be peeled off the ceiling. My magic ratio was 2/3 coffee per 1 cup water, I use strong beens and thats the perfect setting.
I have notice that there is a little bit of coffee grind dust in front of the unit after grinding and I have to tap the lid of ground coffee before I open it...but MUCH less than my old bladed grinder. Just wipe down the counter when you are done, and when you think of it thats not a bad habbit to get into. And being able to grind a whole pot at once, awesome!
Most importantly, the coffee is excellent! A noticeable difference in flavor. I consistantly get great cups of coffee now.
There are more expensive better grinders I'm sure, but for the price and functionality, 5 stars easy! |

| I was a little worried when I read all of the reviews for all of the grinders (not just this one). Everyone was complaining about the grinds being a mess with the plastic containers, but I have not found this at all. This grinder is compact and looks great on my counter, and with a little tap on the counter before I open up the ground coffee container, the grinds all easily end up going straight from the container into my coffee pot. It is much quieter than my old blade grinder, and I haven't had any problems with beans getting stuck even though I use flavored beans. Since the coffee is best when it is freshly ground, I measure what I want for my pot into the grinder rather than filling the bean hopper and letting it decide how much to grind. I would highly recommend this to anyone. I've been using it for about a month now. UPDATE 2/09: I've had this grinder for awhile now. I've found that the mess really depends on the type of beans you purchase. The ones that are fresher and more oily make less mess. Over time, the grinding mechanism has also gotten a little clogged and I can't figure out a way to clean it out. So, I usually run two rounds of grinding instead of one to get the beans all ground. It was at least a year before I started having these problems. Would still buy another one if this one quit on me. |
